Our story and name mirror the deeds of Nehemiah, a Jewish leader who supervised the rebuilding of Jerusalem in the mid-fifth century BC. Just as Nehemiah restored the sacred city to its former glory, Victor Zama and his family, inspired by the work and courage of the biblical figure, embarked on a journey of their own.
A journey that would improve many lives in his local Cobani village and bring hope where it once was forgotten.
Established in 2015, Neemia has grown into a full-fledged charity with a community center and tremendous potential for continuous growth. Our social and human development projects are changing lives every day.
Nestled between hills along the Prut valley, the picturesque village of Cobani endured a rough time in the early 2010s. Plagued by abandoned households and poverty, the residents lacked support from the authorities. Away in noisy Chișinău, Victor Zama couldn’t watch the sad predicament of his native village anymore.
Determined to be the catalyst for change, Victor and his family left the capital, burning with enthusiasm to provide youth with growth opportunities and ensure the elderly a comfortable living. With God by their side, the Zamas, through Neemia charity, amassed a team of local volunteers and overseas partners that brought the Cobani community renewed optimism and meaning.
Below are the events that have marked our short but impactful history:
To mark 10 years of activity in Cobani, we organize a community celebration together with our partners. We also create several beautiful sculptures for the village park—works that highlight Moldovan culture and remain as a gift to the community. Take a look at the newsletter we created to commemorate this event.
We spearhead a participatory budgeting process that leads to the development of a multifunctional sports court and a children’s playground in Cobani, a volleyball net in Camenca, and a recreational space in Butești. These are part of the “EU4Accountability – Empowering Civil Society for Greater Social Responsibility in Moldova” project, which aims to encourage villagers to actively participate in addressing community needs.
With the help of the People in Need foundation, we expand our activity in four neighboring villages, bringing a social canteen and life-saving donations to the socially vulnerable.
Neemia charity continues to be the focal point of the entire Cobani community, contributing to the development of the local school, kindergarten, and health center.
We set up kids and youth clubs, helping children and teenagers develop all-around skills and discover their talents through integration, communication, and creative activities.
The multifunctional community center “Wings of Hope” opens its doors to the most vulnerable, delivering a wide range of social and educational services. A real game-changer, the center is at the core of all our operations.
